“We need marathon runners for justice and equality.”
– John W. Mack
Over the last six years, forty movement leaders have participated in the John W. Mack Movement Building Fellows Program, strengthening leadership and communities across Southern California. Their leadership has disrupted harmful norms and made room for something more life-giving: leadership grounded in care, shared power, and sustainability. Together, they’ve built practices that align with their values and nourish not only their own leadership, but also their organizations and movements—what they’ve cultivated ripples outward, a fractal of transformation rooted in liberation.
Since 2019, Change Elemental has had the honor of designing and facilitating the fellowship in partnership with the Weingart Foundation. Together with the fellows, we’ve co-created a transformative, creative, and practical learning space that centers care, collective well-being, and liberatory power.
The Learning of Liberatory Leadership

“I came to this fellowship looking for people to hope with, and it continues to give me that.”
– 2021 Mack Fellow
Across three cohorts, these leaders have offered powerful lessons in what it means to lead from abundance, justice, and interdependence—and how strengthening leadership at the individual, organizational, and movement levels creates lasting change.
These lessons are uplifted in a set of offerings for the field—a series of learning and impact reports that share insights, reflections, and guidance. Together, these offerings illuminate a powerful, evolving vision of liberatory leadership—one rooted in the lived wisdom of the John W. Mack Fellows and offered as a resource to sustain justice movements now and into the future.
Learning & Impact Brief
This Learning & Impact Brief is a summative overview of the learning and impact of the fellowship to date, learning rooted in the lived wisdom, practices, and reflections of the Mack Fellows themselves. As one fellow shared, reflecting on the impact of the fellowship on their visionary leadership, “Now I have a commitment to leading with my purpose and power.”
Cohort Learning Report Series
The John W. Mack Fellows’ Learning Reports are part of an ongoing series that captures reflections, insights, and practices from fellows’ journeys over the years. Commissioned by the Weingart Foundation, these learning and evaluation reports were developed by Eric Wat, and sharing them is part of our commitment to collective learning and growth. Each report is a deep dive into specific themes and areas of practice as well as a closer look at fellows’ experiences and collective learning, tracing the evolution of liberatory leadership from the inside out.

Visualizing the Fellowship: An Illustrated Story
In collaboration with Lizartistry Graphics, we created a series of graphic illustrations that reflect the spirit, skills, and stories of the fellowship. Each image stands on its own, yet together they convey the layered, interconnected experience of the program—always more than the sum of its parts.
